HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

The Honest Answer: It Depends. Here's What Drives the Number

We would love to be able to put simple costs on the web site. In practice, we've found that no two properties have the same defensible space cost because no two properties have the same starting point, and no two properties owners want the exact same things. Here are the factors that move the number up or down, and what most jobs in Central Washington actually run. When you're ready for an assessment, we can work with you to give you a true estimate for your needs.

What Affects Your Cost

Property Size + Zone Scope Clearing Zone 1 (0–30 ft) alone costs less than a full three-zone treatment. Most homeowners start with Zone 1 and phase Zone 2 in subsequent seasons.
Vegetation Density + Type Dense brush, ladder fuels, and overgrown understory take significantly more time to treat than light or previously maintained growth. Properties that haven't been cleared in several years should expect higher initial costs, with maintenance visits running lower each season after.
Terrain + Slope Steep or uneven ground slows the work and limits equipment options. Hillside properties — especially those where slope increases fire spread risk — may require more hand labor, which affects both time and cost.
Structure Count + Proximity More structures mean more Zone 1 perimeters to clear. Work close to buildings and fences takes more precision — which takes more time.
Debris Disposal Method Chipping and spreading material on-site is less expensive than hauling off. If pile burning is an option, it's often the most cost-effective disposal path.

Typical Cost Ranges — Central Washington

Zone 1 Clearance Only (0–30 ft)
$1500+
Single structure, moderate brush density, accessible terrain. Most common starting scope for homeowners doing a first-time treatment.
Zone 1 & 2 (0–100 ft)
$3000+
Single structure, moderate brush density, accessible terrain. Most common starting scope for homeowners doing a first-time treatment.
Full three-zone treatment (0–300 ft)
$5000+
Larger parcels, dense vegetation, or steep terrain. Range widens significantly based on acreage and site conditions.

The only number that matters is yours. Ranges are a starting point. Our on-site assessment gives you a written scope and exact quote based on your actual property — no obligation.

Grants can offset most or all of this cost. Washington DNR and USFS-backed programs regularly fund defensible space work for homeowners in high-risk zones. Many of our clients pay little to nothing out of pocket. Ask us about eligibility when you call — we handle the documentation.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Defensible Space FAQs

  • How much does defensible space work cost?

It varies by property size, terrain, and vegetation density. We provide a free assessment and written estimate before any work begins. Grant funding may offset a significant portion of the cost.

  • How often does it need to be maintained?

Most properties need annual maintenance after an initial treatment. Some high-growth locations need attention twice a year. We include a maintenance schedule with every project.

  • Will this help with my insurance?

Documented mitigation work is increasingly required by insurers in fire-risk areas. We provide before-and-after photos and a written scope that you can share directly with your agent or broker.

  • Do I need to be home during the work?

No. As long as we have clear access to the property, you don't need to be present. We'll communicate before we start and when the job is complete.
