ABOUT BLUE PINE FUELS

We protect communities.
Because we live in one.

Blue Pine Fuels began in Roslyn, Washington — not as a business idea, but as a community response. We've been on the front lines of wildfire mitigation since 2017, and we bring that firsthand experience to every client we serve.

OUR STORY

It started with a fire threatening our town.

In 2017, the Jolly Mountain Fire threatened Roslyn, Washington. Chris Martin — then a volunteer firefighter — was asked to step in as the city's emergency management coordinator.

What followed wasn't just emergency response. It was the beginning of a years-long mission to understand wildfire, reduce fuels, and systematically harden a community against future threats.

Blue Pine Fuels is what that mission became. The lessons we learned in Roslyn are what we bring to every community and property owner we work with today.

CHRIS MARTIN

President

  • Director, Washington Prescribed Fire Council
  • Firefighter / EMT, Roslyn Fire
  • WA DNR Wildfire Advisory Committee Member
  • Emergency Management Coordinator, City of Roslyn

"When the Jolly Mountain Fire threatened our city, we didn't just fight it — we studied it. That experience became the foundation of everything we do."

Prior to founding Blue Pine Fuels Chris founded several businesses including the Seattle based firms CleanScapes, a solid waste and recycling company, sold to Recology and CDL Recycle sold to DTG Enterprises. Locally Martin founded Roslyn’s Basecamp Books & Bites.

As a volunteer firefighter In Kittitas County since 2011, Martin has seen the difference that fuels treatments and home hardening can make and is a firm believer that well done defensible space has a significant impact on survivability, and that fuels treatments around communities reduces the overall risk. In 2019, Martin secured grant funding to start the UKC Fuels program at Roslyn Fire and in 2022 started Blue Pine to accelerate work on private land.

Martin is past Chair of the WA Prescribed Fire Council and currently serves as Vice-Chair of Kittitas Fire Adapted Communities Coalition and serves on the WA Department of Natural Resources Wildland Fire Advisory Committee.

Chris lives in Roslyn, WA with his wife and two children and enjoys time in the backyard.

Sean Frank

Account Manager

Sean brings nearly a decade of experience in wildfire suppression, prescribed fire, and hazardous fuels reduction to his role as Account Manager at Blue Pine Fuels. His career took him across the Western U.S. and Alaska, where he gained extensive hands-on experience with fire behavior, suppression tactics, and large-scale prescribed burning operations.

After leaving the Forest Service, Sean transitioned to the private sector, focusing on fuels reduction and wildfire mitigation in Central Washington. Since 2023, he has worked locally in the Leavenworth area, implementing defensible space projects, hazardous fuels reduction, and prescribed fire operations. Passionate about community-driven fire resilience, he has been instrumental in developing a local Prescribed Burn Association (PBA) to empower landowners and organizations with the tools to restore fire-adapted landscapes.

Now based in the East Slopes of the Cascades, Sean is dedicated to helping his home community become more fire adapted. When he’s not working to reduce wildfire risk, he’s out exploring the mountains—whether splitboarding in the backcountry, snowmobiling, or enjoying the many lakes and rivers around his home. His deep connection to this landscape fuels his commitment to creating safer, healthier forests and communities.

Devin Dykes

Operations Manager

Devin Dykes brings over a decade of experience in wildland fire, prescribed fire, and fuels management to his role as Operations Manager at Blue Pine Fuels. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies from Central Washington University, which has provided a strong academic foundation to complement his hands-on experience in the field.

Devin spent eight years with the Forest Service including time as a Hotshot and Helicopter Rappeler gaining firsthand knowledge of fire behavior and management strategies, both as a crew member and in various leadership positions.

In addition to his fire management background, Devin spent time as a carpenter, which deepened his understanding of home hardening techniques—an essential component of wildfire mitigation. This practical experience allows him to provide tailored solutions for helping communities and landowners adapt to and prepare for wildland fire events.

In his free time you can find Devin out enjoying his personal passions, including backcountry skiing, mountain biking, trail running, snow machines, and gardening near his home in Leavenworth, Washington. A lifelong tinkerer and learner, Devin continually seeks new ways to grow both professionally and personally.

At Blue Pine Fuels, Devin’s diverse skill set and commitment to service make him a valuable resource for both clients and colleagues alike, as he utilizes his technical knowledge and experience to create real world solutions.

BLUE PINE FUELS story

We started in Roslyn, WA.

Because we had to.

Blue Pine Fuels began in our hometown of Roslyn, Washington, where we helped harden our community against wildfire and learned invaluable lessons in the process. That experience became our foundation. We bring that same knowledge and commitment to every project.

WHY BLUE PINE?

We're named after the fuel we're here to eliminate.

Our name is no accident. "Blue Pine" refers to the telltale blue hue of dead pines infested by mountain pine beetles — trees streaked by fungus, killed from the inside, and left standing as fuel for the next wildfire.

These are exactly the kinds of fuels we help you find and remove. Our name is a reminder of what's at stake — and what we're here to do about it.

THE BLUE PINE

STORY

Mountain Pine Beetle infestation
Beetles bore into pine trees, introducing a fungus (Ophiostomatales) that streaks the wood blue.
The tree turns blue and dies
The distinctive blue hue signals a dead tree: dried out, brittle, and full of resin. Perfect wildfire fuel.
Fuel in waiting
Dead blue pines are among the most dangerous fuels in western forests — and a key target of our mitigation work.
